Conformity key for German Soil Survey Guidelines, 5th edition

The Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) offers a new application for the 5th edition of the German Soil Survey Guidelines (KA5) that is used for soil description in Germany. With this database application, which is available for download, users can check their data for conformity, according to the rules of the KA5.

After connecting the user’s database to the application the conformity key KA5 1.0 will verify the database entries. Complex algorithms test soil and substrate types as well as horizon symbols. The enumeration of horizons and depth information is tested for validity, and missing profile or horizon datasets are identified. Correction of errors can be performed by the user and KA5-compliant data can be exported.

This application helps to improve data quality of either newly acquired data or already existing databases. The usage of the conformity key is part of the quality assurance in the BonaRes Data Centre.
